Baruti is an independent Perfume brand founded by the perfumer Spyros Drosopoulos in Amsterdam.
Baruti, from the greek word for gunpowder. A brand name choosen by its founder to describe keleidoscopic perception of colours and notes, through an immediate and surprising explosion reminding the dynamics of a firework.
“This is what my dreams smell like
I make personal and immediate perfumes
Deceptively playful
Rooted in the unconscious
Perplexing the senses
Like kaleidoscopic explosions of beauty
They can blow you away”
SPYROS (Amsterdam 2014)
Fascinated by perfumery since ever, Spyros graduated in psychology in 2001. In 2007 he got a PhD in analysis focusing on the relation linking sleep and memory, or the mechanisms by which, during sleep, the brain processes and convert into lasting memories the information recorded during the conscious phase. The relation between smell and memory is an aspect of these dynamics and, in 2009, he decided to deepen the studies of fragrance creation.
In 2011 he launched Indigo, a fragrance inspired to “High Noon”, a painting of Edward Hopper. The painting depicts a woman standing at the doorstep. Her face is serene, she is waiting for someone or maybe she’s absorbed in the contemplation of the landscape. Hopper might want to emphasize the sense of anticipation or describe the loneliness of the woman or, Spyros wonders, delimit the boundary point between the intense, warm light of the sunny landscape and the fresh, soothing, intimate nucleus of the house behind her. Indigo reworks the perspective by tracing the passage through that door in a fragrance that is perceived through fresh resinous and floral notes and evolves into a progression of mysterious, rich and enveloping notes.
In 2014, his passion for painting, for color and perspective, are still at the heart of a new creation: Melkmeisje, a fragrance that abstracts the suggestion of a portrait of Johannes Vermeer.
The perfume, realized on the occasion of an exhibition in Amsterdam, is initially made as a transposition of colors and elements of the painting in olfactory notes, but later is reworked from a different perspective.
Spyros decides to let the woman in Melkmeisje collect the elements that surround her: a ray of light, the smell of milk and honey, the warm notes of wood and of freshly baked bread. The woman is wearing light clothing, maybe it’s springtime.. and from the lighted window comes a scent of flowers. The fragrance is enriched with a note of sweet pear and tender shades of lilac and lime blossom.
Like all the fragrances of Baruti collection, Voyance is developped on contrasts. Smoky notes of Guaiac wood, melt with the intense shades of floral-creamy tuberose and sandalwood, transparent hints of vetiver and musk, bring to life a sheer-smooky perfume. Chai is inspired by passion for tea and the several ways to taste a cup of tea all around the world. Tea (Chai) melt with spices, milk, cocoa and vanilla notes, through leather-smoky notes and musks, an aromathic-spicy perfume. Berlin Im Winter is an aromathic-fruity fragrance that tells the story of a passion within the walls of an intimate and cozy room, soft lighting and a wide window over Berlin, while it’s dark outside and the snow slowly falls on a long winter night. NoOud reproduces both the smell and the sensation of the valuable raw material, but without using a single drop of it. An complex combination of natural and synthetic notes that recreates the intense Oud fragrance.
Each Baruti creation, continuosly shifts the focus from reality to immaginary dimensions, to create new and unusual accords and points of view, drawing on natural and synthetic raw materials for the construction of each of the six fragrances of the collection. A play of lights that changes the perception and the colors’ arrangement. As if the observer was moving the lens of a kaleidoscope. If your reflection in the mirror could come to life in a different dimension, what would he see? You can read the notes of the perfumes or imagine the fragrances, but, maybe, it’s just best to let your nose guide you and to let your fantasy complete the suggestion. Or, as suggests the nose behind the brand: “don’t be surprised if you are suprised by what you smell, just trust your nose!”.
Baruti Fragrances, sealed in bottles of a modern design, guarantee their high persistence thanks to Parfum concentration. The size is 30 ml.
