Wanting to describe the appearance of a goddess, the imagination suggests the materialization of an ethereal figure who emerges through a softened and golden cloud, with light effects and fading. This is Nüwa, a sublime and refined fragrance, a dreamy and visionary composition from the excellent nose of master perfumer Roja Dove.
The first impression that this incredible perfume transmits is the visual sensation of a tiny splash of golden dust, among the bright notes of the citrusy top notes of Grapefruit and Bergamot with a warm touch of Cumin and a soft veil of Orange blossom.
Like in The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams, the fragrance reveals itself through a light and vibrant, lively and pure harmony that seems to float. Its oriental connotation is immediate, it suggests the image of a small Asian market, in an isolated village on the banks of a river. It’s the dawn and at the first sunshine, when everything is still quiet, the fresh morning air reaps the scent of citruses from large wicker baskets and their crystalline sweetness melts with the hypnotic aroma of banks spices.
Only after a few minutes, the composition becomes warmer and seduces the nose through the notes of Rose and Jasmin, SandalWood and Vanilla that chase eachother like the chords of Liszt’s Liebestraum. It is an almost palpable sensation of a walk through the lush gardens, the opening up of the flower petals and their fragrance wafting evanescent as the sun is at its peak.
Gradually, the heart notes blend to a balsamic hint of spices and resins. It is as the golden aura of the Goddess was drawing its colour from the blue sky. The effect of this bewitching essence leaves no way out, as the most breathtaking sunset, and sighing softly the elixir reveals the benzoin, the Cloves, the pepper and the Balsam of Peru to take us into a magical and mystical, ancient but present world at same time. Something mysterious and warm on skin, a fragrance that touches the heart and takes us far away in romance, like Debussy Claire de Lune.
In about an hour, the pyramid development is complete and the skin is dressed with like veils of coloured and shiny silk, whose singular movement reproduces the sinuous dance. The delicate and chypré, round and spicy wake is the signature of this oriental composition, so fresh and bright, juicy sweet and tender.
I believe that there isn’t a composition or an harmony that the magic of a perfume could not create, but it is a fact that the beauty, complexity and elegance of this creation has the power to play each of the sweetest, passionate and touching melodies.
There is no antidote to beauty and Nüwa, definitely, can be addictive.
From the prestigiuos Imperial Scents collection of Roja Dove, Nüwa is a fragrance inspired to an ethereal Gooddess of the Chinese mythology, half human and half dragon. Symbol of femininity and of the bewitching power of beauty. Her human side represents creation, elegance, kindness, wisdom, goodness, self-denial and maternal protection. On the other side, her dragon half, is a recall of the cruelty of nature, right in ways that often men and every being cannot understand, free from subjective views and dominated by its own inscrutable rules. How could we recognize beauty, in a wider context, whether it was the one and only feature of what we observe, without contrast, without a doubt, without suffering ? Human creation is recognized to Nüwa. Her power allowed her to shape the universe by her grace, giving a scent to every flower cherished in its path, languidly seducing the human soul with the inspiration and education to the arts of music, dance and singing. However, the separation of the human species from the animal world, was never entirely defined. Humanity, still at the mercy of the laws of nature, instinct and temptation induced by evil spirits (those in which Catholic culture was transcribed as “deadly sins“), it was given the ability to glimpse the divine nature, which they could never rise if not eternally searching for beauty.
